According to the Merck Index the specific rotation of the raw material is +104°. The capsule contents, at least the lipoic acid, went into solution rather quickly.

Considering that the lipoic acid content per capsule can vary by at least as much as 10%, the result of +98° would appear to confirm that it is R-ALA and not a mixture or the levorotatory.
